What is a Medical Emergency?

It is a medical condition that is escalating to a point where immediate medical advice is needed to make a decision to either go to an emergency room or begin home palliative therapy.

Here are some examples:
1. Poisoning
2. Respiratory distress causing no oral intake or little activity
3. Seizure
4. Managed care permission to bring child to the emergency room for treatment such as for a laceration, broken bone, etc. Please note that we sometimes do sutures in our offices as time permits.
5. Rectal temperature greater than 101o in children under three months of age; extreme lethargy in older children despite trying to get the temperature down
6. Greater than 5% dehydration from gastroenteritis (diarrhea and vomiting), i.e., listlessness, dry mouth, no urine output, no tears when crying
7. ANYTHING THAT GREATLY CONCERNS YOU AS A PARENT.

What can usually wait until regular office hours

1. Prescription refills (don't you agree?)
2. Fevers in children that are drinking fluids and show some activity.
3. Cold symptoms
4. Mild diarrhea and vomiting (gastroenteritis)
5. Mild sprains
6. Diaper rash
7. Pink eye
